Freshman Undergraduates
Description
Freshmen of Santa Clara University who live in a campus residence hall are not allowed to bring cars on to campus for their Fall through Spring quarters. We strongly encourage that freshmen do not bring their cars and park along the streets either; this will only increase traffic flow problems in the neighborhood and will intrude on the surrounding residents.Upperclassmen are not allowed to purchase parking permits for freshmen. The privilege to on campus parking of both the upperclassman and the freshman can be permanently revoked if this occurs. Also, the number of credits you have will not affect your ability to get a permit. Even if you are a residential freshman with sophomore credits, you will not be allowed to purchase a permit.
Students will receive a free temporary Move-In and Move-Out permit at the beginning and end of each academic year. Any of their guests that arrive during weekdays are able to purchase a daily parking permit ($6 all day and $5 after 5:00pm) at the University’s Main Gate on Palm Drive or at Campus Safety. To get a more in-depth explanation, please read our Freshman Resident Parking Policy document.
Reasoning
Because of a shortage in parking, especially during special events, the University decided that restricting permits for freshmen residents would be the fairest solution. The University encourages freshmen to live in residence halls so they are surrounded by opportunities to get involved, and most on-campus organizations provide their participants with transportation if it is required. There are a number of on-campus jobs available through BroncoTrak. You may do your shopping at The Cellar Market in the basement of the Benson Center is open daily for your convenience. Safeway, a full-service supermarket is across the street from Sobrato Hall. Mission City FCU has a branch on campus in Benson; and a number of other banks are within walking distance. Westfield Valley Fair, a regional shopping Mall and Santana Row is a 15 minute bus ride (Route 60) from the CalTrain station (across from SCU’s main entrance); and a number of major department stores are accessible on El Camino Real in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale by taking the VTA Route 22 bus.
Exceptions to the Policy
Students who transfer from another college or university and have completed a full school year are allowed to buy parking permits.Freshmen who can provide adequate evidence that they will face hardship are able to apply for a permit by filling out a waiver. The waivers will be reviewed by a committee of students chosen by the ASSCU and faculty, and its decision will not be changed once it is made. Students fill out a waiver every quarter they will require a permit and the acceptance for one quarter will not carry over. There is a submission deadline every quarter and the application process will not be open until the following quarter. Click here for a Hardship Resident Parking Permit Request Form

In addition, they have created the "Bronco Bus," an inexpensive way to take periodic excursions throughout the Bay Area including San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Many campus venues have expanded their hours of operation to attract student participation. The University’s Transportation Page lists a number of public transportation alternatives for freshman including VTA and CalTrain which has a station directly across the street from SCU’s main entrance.
