Spring Quarter - Week 7

A message from Fr. Kyle Shinseki, S.J.

Aloha mai kākou SCU community,

In the midst of this global crisis, I am reminded of my late grandmother, Fudeko Shinseki, the daughter of Japanese immigrants from Hiroshima-ken.  She survived the influenza pandemic in 1918, which ravaged the island of Kaua‘i, where I was raised.  My grandmother embodied the values of 我慢 (gaman), which is a Japanese term of Buddhist origin referring to persevering with dignity and patience in the face of adversity and 子供のために (kodomo no tame ni), which literally means, “for the sake of the children,” a reference to selfless sacrifice for others. These values have been made manifest by Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage in countless ways throughout the history of our nation and in so doing have helped strengthen the fabric of our society to confront challenges like the one we face today.

The Asia and Pacific region is home to more than half of the world’s population, many of the world’s great religious and philosophical traditions find their origins there, and it is the birthplace of arguably the most renowned navigators and seafarers in the world. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders enrich our Santa Clara community with the wealth of wisdom and rich cultural traditions from our ancestral homelands. Many of these traditions reflect how faith, family, and culture are deeply intertwined, from the tilak in India to the mano po in the Philippines and the ifoga in Samoa. As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month as an SCU community, I would like to extend to you my warmest greetings and prayers that you and your loved ones are well during these challenging times.

Fr. Kyle幸 Francisco 新関, SJ

Ignite Youth Ministry Internship, Jesuit Spiritual Center, Cincinnati, Ohio

The Ignite Internship is a year-long ministerial immersion experience. Members of the Ignite Internship live in community on the grounds of the Center for the year in our historic Rock House. Through their work as members of the Youth Ministry team, they help provide around 75 retreats for over 6,000 students. During the course of the program, interns are given the opportunity to discern committing to a second year. In addition to professional development, interns also receive spiritual formation in the Ignatian tradition.

Fun fact -- JC Santos did this internship during her gap year before grad school at JST! Highly recommended! Email JC if you want to know more about the program.
