Advisory Board

Comprised of distinguished members of the off-campus community, the Advisory Board provides ideas and counsel from an independent perspective, assists in planning and fundraising, and enhances communication between the Center and its external constituencies.


Advisory Board Members

  • Kathy Almazol

    Sr. Associate and Head of Faith Formation, Markkula Center for Applied Ethics

    Kathy Almazol is Sr. Associate and Head of Faith Formation at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, and previously was the Superintendent of the elementary and secondary schools in the Diocese of San Jose. She was an administrator in the elementary schools for over twenty years.

  • Kathy Anderson

    President and Executive Director, Catholic Community Foundation of Los Angeles

    (On Leave) Kathy Anderson is President and Executive Director of the Catholic Community Foundation of Los Angeles. She has been affiliated with CCF-LA since it was founded in 2014 and today she is responsible for client development and program administration.

  • Kristi Markkula Bowers

    Director of Sales and Marketing, Kings Mountain Vineyards; Trustee, Santa Clara University

    Kristi Markkula Bowers is the Director of Sales and Marketing for Kings Mountain Vineyards. She currently also serves on the boards of directors of the Markkula Foundation, Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School, the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association Education Foundation, and the Santa Clara University Board of Trustees.

    John Bronson is an expert in the field of strategic corporate and operational development. Having spent the better part of his 28-year career helping high-growth companies build big brands through careful attention to the people who run them, Mr. Bronson is a strong advocate for the principles behind strategic planning and hiring.

  • Doug Chance

    Retired, Wyse Technology, Octel, Hewlett-Packard Company

    Doug Chance was previously Executive V.P. of Hewlett Packard’s Network Systems Sector. He has served on many corporate and non-profit boards of directors in Silicon Valley including Community Foundation Silicon Valley. He is a graduate of Princeton University, BSE ‘64, and Stanford University, MBA ‘66.

  • Dan Cooperman

    Retired General Counsel, Apple and Oracle

    Dan Cooperman is the former senior vice president and general counsel of Oracle Corporation (1997-2007) under Larry Ellison and senior vice president and general counsel of Apple Inc. (2007-2009) under Steve Jobs. Following his retirement from Apple, Dan served as senior counsel at DLA Piper LLP, a global law firm, and taught a course entitled, “The Role of the Modern General Counsel” at Stanford Law and Business Schools.

  • Art Courville

    Retired, Symantec Corporation

    Prior to retiring on October 31, 2009, Art Courville was the Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary for Symantec Corporation, a global leader in providing security, storage and systems management software for consumers and businesses.

  • Michael E. Fox Sr.

    Chairman, M.E. Fox & Company, Inc.

    Mr. Fox has served on many boards in the community, which have included a chairmanship of the Eastfield Ming Quong. He founded and chaired the very successful Santa Clara County Valley Medical Center Foundation with an initial gift. Today, this foundation is most prominent and serves many thousands of people in our community.

  • Charles Geschke

    Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board, Adobe Systems, Inc.

    Charles (Chuck) Geschke co-founded Adobe Systems Incorporated in 1982. A leader in the software industry for more than 35 years, Geschke retired from his position as president of Adobe in 2000 and continues to share the chairmanship of the board with Adobe’s cofounder John Warnock.

  • Lori Laub

    Entrepreneur, Technology & Services Executive

    Lori Laub has held executive management positions as Vice President of Customer Care for Great Plains Software, Intuit Corporation, and Vantive Corporation, General Manager Entry Business Unit for Microsoft/Great Plains Software, VP Support Products at Ziff-Davis Publishing; Chief Information Officer and VP Information Services at Remedy Corporation; Founder & VP Business Development at Yiftee.

  • Gary Lauder

    Managing Partner, Lauder Partners LLC

    Gary Lauder is the Managing Director of Lauder Partners LLC, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm investing primarily in information technologies. He has been a venture capitalist since 1985, investing in over 100 private companies.

  • Dick Levy

    Board Member and Former Chairman, Sutter Health

    Dick Levy is former chairman of the board of Sutter Health, the chair of the Finance and Planning Committee for the Bay Area Region of Sutter Health, and a board member of the Sutter Health Peninsula Coastal Region. He is also Chairman Emeritus of the board and former CEO of Varian Medical Systems. This leading Silicon Valley-based company provides high-energy radiation equipment, hardware and software for treating cancer, as well as X-ray tubes for diagnostic radiology.

  • Carol Mayer Marshall

    Retired Superintendent, San Francisco Mint

    Ms. Marshall (formerly Carol M. Khosrovi) has extensive and distinguished government and private sector experience. Her career highlights include becoming the first woman Congressional Relations Director in any government agency and the first woman Director of VISTA (Domestic Peace Corps).

  • Katharine A. Martin

    Chair and Partner, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati

    Katharine (Katie) Martin is chair of the board of directors and a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. She practices corporate and securities law at their Palo Alto office, and previously served as a member of the Policy Committee and as the leader of the firm's business law department.

  • Marty Melone

    Retired, Ernst & Young

    Martin R. Melone is a retired partner of Ernst & Young LLP, where he was responsible for global clients in a wide range of industries. He was a partner of that firm from 1975 to 2001. He is a member of the board of directors of Internet Brands, Inc., and chairs its audit and ethics committee. He is also a director of Public Counsel, the country’s largest pro bono law firm, and a trustee and Treasurer of the California Science Center Foundation.

  • C.S. Park

    Independent Director of Seagate Technology

    C.S. Park is currently serving Independent Director of Seagate Technology, a world-wide leader in data storage solutions, and as a member of the Global Board of DLA Piper, a global law firm. He is also a board member and former chair of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

  • F. Noel Perry

    Managing Director, Baccharis Capital, Inc.

    Noel Perry is the Founder and Managing Director of Baccharis Capital, Inc., a private venture capital firm, started in 1991, located in Menlo Park, CA. The company's focus is on early stage investments in educational software, educational toys, organic food, health, and other consumer products.

  • Risë R. Pichon

    Judge, Probate Division, Santa Clara County

    Judge Risë R. Pichon has been a Superior Court Judge of the County of Santa Clara, State of California since 1998. She previously served as a Judge on the Municipal Court from 1984 to 1998 and also as a Court Commissioner from 1983 to 1984. She received a Juris Doctor Degree from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1976 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics in 1973 from Santa Clara University after having transferred from Xavier University in New Orleans in 1971.

    Roey Rahmil is an associate attorney with Shartsis Friese LLP. His litigation practice focuses on complex business cases, with an emphasis on representing professionals and businesses in professional liability, real estate, and insurance coverage matters.   • Ann M. Ravel

    University of California Berkeley School of Law

    Ann M. Ravel was nominated to the Federal Election Commission by President Barack Obama on June 21, 2013. She served as Chair of the Commission for 2015 and Vice Chair for 2014. Previously, Ms. Ravel served as Chair of the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC). Before joining the FPPC, Ms. Ravel served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Torts and Consumer Litigation in the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice. Ms. Ravel also worked as an attorney in the Santa Clara County Counsel's Office, ultimately serving as the appointed County Counsel from 1998 until 2009.

  • Byron A. Scordelis

    Retired Chairman and CEO, Greater Bay Bancorp

    Byron A. Scordelis, Director, served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Greater Bay Bancorp from January 1, 2004 until its sale in October 1, 2007. He joined Greater Bay Bancorp in 2001 as its Chief Operating Officer and President of the Greater Bay Banking Group, which was comprised of the company's banking subsidiaries as well as its business and technology operations, trust services and human resources activities.

  • Michael Shea, Sr.

    President, Shea & Shea

    Michael M. Shea, Sr. founded Shea & Shea in 1966. He represents injured victims and their families in a wide range of complex catastrophic injury cases and is licensed to practice in state and federal courts.Shea is admitted to practice in California; Washington; the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California; the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California; the U.S. Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit; and the U.S. Supreme Court.

  • Richard Slavin

    CEO Emeritus, Palo Alto Medical Foundation

    Dr. Slavin, a thoracic and vascular surgeon, is an experienced healthcare executive who is the CEO Emeritus of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. He has had over 35 years of leadership in multi-specialty group medical practice guiding his group’s successful evolution with a focus on patient service and quality improvement. Dr. Slavin has also had a productive surgical career including responsibilities as the Chief of Surgery at El Camino Hospital and for many years on the clinical faculty at Stanford Medical School. Raised in San Francisco, Slavin attended the University of California at Berkeley, graduated from Washington University Medical School, and received his surgical training at Stanford University Medical Center. He is currently on a number of local community non-profit boards.

  • Ervie Smith

    Consultant, Non-Profit Management, Ervie L. Smith, Inc.

    Ervie Smith is the President/CEO of Ervie L. Smith, Inc. She has had a very a successful consulting practice since 1974 working primarily with nonprofits in Silicon Valley in the areas of fund raising, board development, strategic planning, organizational development and capital campaigns.

  • Joyce Ann Viloria, MD

    Internal Medicine, Primary Care Physician, Permanente Medical Group

    Joyce Viloria is a primary care physician at Kaiser Santa Clara, joining in 2012. Her medical interests include the management of chronic medical conditions, healthy nutrition, and preventive medicine.

  • Charmaine Warmenhoven

    Community Volunteer; Trustee, Santa Clara University

    Charmaine Warmenhoven has had a 25-year career as a teacher and administrator in Special Education and Disability Ministry. From 1988 through 2001, she was the Associate Director of Special Ministries at the Diocese of San Jose. This ministry assists parishes with the inclusion of people with disabilities into all aspects of parish life.

  • Don Watters

    Director Emeritus, McKinsey and Company

    Don Watters is a Director Emeritus of McKinsey & Company, the global management consulting firm. During his 28 years with the Firm, Don and his family lived and worked in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Netherlands and Australia. He served primarily private sector clients in nearly 20 different industries on issues of strategy, organization and operations. In the late 1980’s, he led the team that opened McKinsey’s Silicon Valley Office.

Emeritus Members

  • A.C. "Mike" Markkula Jr.

    Owner, A.C.M. Investments

    A. C. "Mike" Markkula, Jr. has been associated with Santa Clara University in various capacities since 1984, and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2003-2009. Mr. Markkula and his wife Linda, provided initial funding for the Center for Applied Ethics and served as Chairman of the Board of Advisors and a member of the steering committee. The University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree in 1992.

  • William Terry

    Retired Executive Vice President, Hewlett-Packard Company

    Prior to retirement in November 1993, William E. (Bill) Terry was Executive Vice President of the Measurement Systems Sector and a Director of the Hewlett-Packard Company, located in Palo Alto, California.
