Department ofTheatre and Dance

Message from the Chair to Prospective Students

Our department is proud of its strong tradition of educating artists who are excelling at all disciplines in the performing arts. Both theatre and dance graduates have performed on Broadway and in national tours such as Lion King, Cats and with the Rockettes. Our graduates are educators at all levels from serving as Director of the Drama Division at Juilliard to inspiring young artists like yourself as excellent high school teachers. Our graduates in costume, light and set design have designed for television and major professional venues in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and the Bay Area. Graduates have successfully founded new theatre and dance companies in many of these same cities and are creating and producing cutting edge new theatre and dance that engages with real issues of our time, informed by the values of social justice instilled throughout department classes and activities. In short, when you join our department we prepare you to Perform Meaningfully in whatever profession you choose. In addition to graduates excelling in the performing arts at all levels, we are equally excited about our graduates who become doctors, dentists and lawyers or enter Silicon Valley high tech businesses.

This is a great time to join our us as we continue to develop such significant outreach programs as Teatro Catalina in Nicaragua, initiate performing arts immersion trips to NYC and other major performance centers. Our students have numerous opportunities to create original work including choreographing senior recitals, designing for departmental productions and through playwriting, one of our newest disciplines to grab the limelight. Recent graduates have won national recognition awards, are writing for television and have had their work produced off-Broadway.

In addition to receiving excellent training in performance, design, and developing critical perspectives in performance working with our professional faculty, you will develop essential life skills as well. The business skills sought by employers such as leadership and communication directly correlate with what you learn in many aspects of our department. Check out some of our alumni in Life After SCU. We realize you may wish to pursue other areas of study, so our major is designed to allow you to double major and still be challenged to grow as artists at the highest level. I welcome you to call me at 408-554-4043 or email with any questions about our program. We invite you to Perform Meaningfully for the next four years at SCU.
